Catch of the day

1 06 2010

On St Lucia I saw a t shirt with a print that made me laugh with recognition; ‘ Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in his boat and drink beer all day’. I should have bought three of these t shirts for three gentlemen that I know.

Fishing is mainly male entertainment and a deep black money hole, even Jeroen agrees to this. But some days you just keep on wheeling them in. Like today. Unfortunately not everything that you catch is something that you want to put in the pan. Like today. It is not the first time that this has happened, between la Gomerra and Gambia we also had one of these days; we caught three sharks in a row. But at least that was a bit cool and exiting.

Today we caught three sea gulls in a row Nothing cool about that.

The first caught the hook in foot, and while wheeling it in his friends were basking around him, cheering him on. We got the hook out, and our little friend flew away with his buddies relatively unharmed. Lesson learned we thought. Until 10 minutes later when the next seagull was caught in the fishing line with one of his wings. I tried to hold him while Jeroen untangled him. Not being particularly grateful for our rescue operation, he constantly tried to bite. Those beeks are quite sharp. After yet another release we decided to reel in the line, just to see that a third bird was caught in it again. Needless to say that we are not fishing any more today.

But there are also times when what you catch actually does go into the pan, and like with the catch of two days ago, even in the freezer. We have finally landed a fish over 1 meter. A beautiful dorade of 7 kg and 106 cm. See Photos in a few days for the Sophia/dorade comparison. A good meal for several days, and we even left a bit for the sharks. As long as they don’t take our bait.
